Why it has to be LED
Hardware that never comes down faces a harder test than hardware that lives in a box eleven months a year. That rules out most of what people picture when they hear Christmas lights. The case for LED is that it runs cool, sips power and has no filament, and all three matter when the thing never comes inside.You do not have to follow the technical side to buy well. It is a reason to want a specific answer about the hardware, instead of a general assurance. The people who can walk you through it are generally the ones doing it properly.
What the track does
Each diode sits in an aluminum track, not clipped to a gutter. That channel does two things at once: conceal and direct. It gets matched to the color of your trim or fascia before it goes up, which is why a good install is invisible at noon and obvious at nine.

Power, wiring and the box on the wall
Behind the visible run there is wiring, a transformer and a control unit. How that wiring is routed says more about the crew than the lights do. Ask how the wiring is concealed before the install, not after.
What it means that it never comes down
The upside of never taking it down has a matching requirement: it has to be installed well the first time. A system installed properly asks very little of you. A sloppy install is a daytime problem forever. The hardware is the easier half. The workmanship is the other half.
Weather is the real test
Nothing about leaving it up is theoretical once August arrives. Summer heat on a south facing roof edge is considerable, and heat is the enemy of anything with a circuit in it. Moisture is the other test. Which is why the quality argument is about the joints and the housing, not the light itself.
Brightness is a setting, not a fixed value
The output can be turned down. At full output the house is a statement. Turned down, it is exterior lighting. The everyday level ends up low, and that is the setting doing the actual work.
